Rising Scottish Star Makes Championship Move

Derby County has secured the signature of Scotland international defender Max Johnston from Austrian Bundesliga champions Sturm Graz, with the player signing a contract that runs until 2029. This transfer marks a significant milestone in the 21-year-old’s rapidly ascending career.

Impressive Track Record

Johnston’s time in Austria was marked with remarkable success, as he helped Sturm Graz claim their first Austrian Bundesliga title since 2010/11, breaking Red Bull Salzburg’s decade-long dominance. The achievement led to the club’s first UEFA Champions League proper appearance since 2000/01, alongside claiming their seventh Austrian Cup.

The young defender has already accumulated valuable experience in major European competitions, including the UEFA Champions League, Europa League, and Conference League. His talent was recognised when he was named Scottish Young Player of the Year in 2022/23 during his time with Motherwell.

International Recognition

Johnston made his senior Scotland debut on March 20, 2025, in a UEFA Nations League victory over Greece. He has been selected for Scotland’s upcoming 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers, where the team will face Denmark and Belarus in September.

Family Legacy

Born in Middlesbrough in 2003, Johnston comes from strong footballing stock – his father Allan, who played as a midfielder, earned 18 caps for Scotland and was playing in the Premier League with Middlesbrough at the time of Max’s birth.

Future Prospects

As Derby County’s 12th summer signing, Johnston brings to British football an impressive haul of two Austrian Bundesliga titles, one Austrian Cup, and significant European and international experience. His arrival signals Derby County’s ambition and commitment to strengthening their squad with proven talent.
