US Open 2025 Sets New Record with Unprecedented $90 Million Prize Money Pool
Historic Prize Money Milestone at US Open 2025
The 2025 US Open has made history as the first tennis event to reach $90 million in total player compensation, offering the largest prize-money purse in tennis history. This milestone marks a significant increase from last year’s $75 million total, with double-digit percentage increases.
Record-Breaking Champion Payouts
The men’s and women’s singles champions will each earn $5 million, representing a 39 per cent increase compared to last year. Prize money in all rounds have seen double-digit increases, with singles first-round winners receiving $110,000. In the doubles events, winning teams will split $1 million.
Comprehensive Prize Money Distribution
Reaching the semifinals guarantees a seven-figure payday at $1.26 million. Simply reaching the start of the tournament ensures a six-figure payday at $110,000. Players who advance to the Round of 64 receive $154,000, while Round of 32 participants earn $237,000.
Historical Context and Growth
The US Open’s journey with prize money began in 1968 when the Open Era started, with a total prize pool of just $100,000. By 1973, it became the first Grand Slam tournament to offer equal prize money to both men’s and women’s competitors. A significant milestone was reached in 2003 when singles champions’ prize money first hit $1 million, with the total prize money reaching $17 million.
Leading the Grand Slam Circuit
The $90 million figure places the US Open well ahead of the prize pools for the three other Grand Slam events. For comparison, Wimbledon’s total prize money this past July was £53,500,000 ($73,558,224).
As stated by a tournament spokesperson: “The US Open has made a deliberate and concerted effort to ensure double-digit percentage increases from 2024 in all rounds of all events for all players, while at the same time significantly increasing the percentage of prize money for athletes playing deep into the singles draws”.
