Record-Breaking Applications and International Growth

The 2025 UCAS admissions cycle has witnessed a notable increase in applications, with total numbers rising to 600,660, including a record number of UK 18-year-olds applying for university or college places.

The UK’s higher education sector continues to demonstrate strong global appeal, with international undergraduate applications increasing by 2.7%. The most significant growth came from China (+2,540 applicants), Ireland (+750), and the USA (+700).

Key Changes and Improvements

In a significant move towards increased accessibility, UCAS has eliminated the application fee for students receiving free school meals. This change will be implemented through the adviser portal, where teachers and advisers will verify eligible students, removing the fee requirement upon application completion.

The 2025 cycle has shown particularly strong growth in STEM subjects, with engineering and technology applications up by 13% and mathematical sciences rising by 7%. Other popular areas include Law and architecture (both up 9%), business and management (6% increase), and medicine and dentistry (2% rise).

Trends and Challenges

Despite the overall growth, there has been a 6.4% decrease in UK mature applicants (aged 21+), following recent trends in mature student applications.

The pattern of applications shows varying demand across different institution types. High-tariff universities have seen the strongest benefits, while less selective institutions have experienced declining numbers. This trend is particularly evident in international student applications, where high-tariff institutions saw a 6% increase, while lower-tariff institutions faced a 7% decrease.

Looking Ahead

The 2025 admissions cycle introduces significant revamps to the undergraduate application process, incorporating stakeholder feedback to enhance both the student application journey and provide universities with more accurate and relevant information.

The system continues to maintain its commitment to fair admissions through carefully structured application dates and deadlines, ensuring equal consideration for both domestic and international students while allowing for well-considered decisions.
