The Guest: How Wales Transformed into a Stunning Backdrop for BBC’s Latest Thriller

A Welsh Production Takes Center Stage
The Guest, a captivating four-part British thriller series created for BBC One and BBC iPlayer, stars Eve Myles and Gabrielle Creevy. The drama follows the complex relationship between Fran, a wealthy business owner, and Ria, her employee, as their dynamic evolves into a dangerous game of secrets and lies.
Prime Filming Locations
The series was primarily filmed in Wales, utilizing both studio spaces and real locations. The production took advantage of Dragon Studios in Bridgend County and various locations around Cardiff, Newport, and Rhossili in the Gower Peninsula.
At the heart of the series lies Maybury Court, Fran’s mansion in southern Wales, which was filmed at Whitson Court, a Grade II* listed country house in Goldcliff, Newport. The historic building was designed by John Nash for William Phillips, the High Sheriff for Monmouthshire, around 1791.
Diverse Urban and Coastal Settings
Newport proved to be an excellent choice for filming, offering both city streets and country settings. Whitson Court, standing in as Fran’s lavish Maybury Court, was particularly noteworthy for its beautiful grounds and historical charm.
The production also showcased the stunning coastline of Rhossili Bay and Worm’s Head (also known as Devil’s Bridge), creating cinematic contrast between natural landscapes and urban settings. Notably, Rhossili Bay is recognized as one of the world’s most beautiful beaches and has previously featured in productions like Doctor Who and The Third Day starring Jude Law.
Production Timeline and Local Impact
The project received support through Creative Wales, with most of the crew being Wales-based. Filming took place from September to November 2024 in and around Cardiff, with location work spanning across South Wales. As Catherine Ayers, one of the cast members, noted: ‘As a Welsh person, it feels important to tell a Welsh story here in Wales. What makes it even more special is the fact that the crew is filled with Welsh talent.’
The series is set to premiere on September 1, 2025, promising to showcase Wales’s diverse landscapes while delivering a gripping psychological thriller that will keep audiences on the edge of their seats.
