Sustainable Tourism Revolution: How the Cotswolds is Leading the Way in Eco-Friendly Travel

A Green Revolution in the Heart of England
The Cotswolds, spanning nearly 800 square miles of superb scenery, is one of England’s most beautiful landscapes. This living, working landscape has long been cherished by both residents and visitors alike.
In a groundbreaking development, the region is now witnessing a new wave of eco-friendly initiatives aimed at shaping a greener future for its visitor economy. Cotswolds Tourism, in collaboration with local councils and business partners, has launched a dedicated Eco-friendly Cotswolds section on their website, making it easier for visitors to discover environmentally responsible places to stay, eat, drink, shop and explore.
Car-Free Cotswolds Initiative
A flagship project, the Car-Free Cotswolds initiative, is revolutionising how visitors explore the region. The programme works with local businesses to facilitate car-free access throughout the area. More than 20 businesses have already joined the Good Journey network, offering rewards to visitors who choose sustainable travel options such as public transport, cycling, or walking.
This initiative addresses a crucial challenge: the region’s tendency to become overcrowded with vehicles during peak seasons. The solution leverages existing infrastructure, including frequent train services from major cities like London and Oxford, complemented by connecting buses to popular Cotswold villages.
Preserving Natural Heritage
As highlighted by Councillor Paul Hodgkinson, portfolio holder for health, culture and visitor experience at Cotswold District Council, these initiatives are crucial for protecting the region’s world-renowned natural beauty and unique habitats. The sustainable tourism initiatives represent a vital step in balancing visitor enjoyment with long-term environmental stewardship.
Local authorities emphasise that sustainability isn’t merely a trendy concept but essential for protecting the Cotswolds’ status as an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty (AONB). The goal is to create a fairer, cleaner, and greener Cotswolds that benefits both visitors and residents.
Looking to the Future
The initiative is being led by Cotswolds Tourism, the official Destination Management Organisation for the region. Operating as a public-private sector organisation, it represents a partnership of tourism businesses with support from local authorities. This collaborative approach ensures a comprehensive and sustainable future for one of Britain’s most beloved tourist destinations.
