A New Era of Global Connectivity

Starlink, the satellite internet constellation operated by SpaceX’s subsidiary Starlink Services, LLC, has established itself as a leading global telecommunications provider, with a vast network of mass-produced small satellites in low Earth orbit (LEO) that communicate with designated ground transceivers.

Unprecedented Growth and Coverage

As of February 2025, Starlink operates the world’s largest satellite constellation, with over 6,750 satellites currently in orbit, serving millions of active customers around the globe with high-speed, low-latency internet. In the United States alone, the median download speed across more than 2 million active Starlink customers during times of peak demand is nearly 200 Mbps as of July 2025.

Technological Breakthroughs

A significant advancement came with the iOS 18.3 update, which introduced Starlink satellite access to iPhones without requiring users to point their phones at the sky. This represents one of the most significant tech collaborations in the past year. While currently limited to text messaging in beta testing, SpaceX plans to expand to call and data coverage in the future.

Global Expansion and Challenges

SpaceX’s Starlink network has rapidly expanded around the globe, bringing high-speed broadband to regions once deemed unreachable. As of 2025, Starlink is operational in over 100 countries across North America, Europe, South America, Africa, Asia, and Oceania. However, the service faced one of its biggest international outages in July 2025, affecting tens of thousands of users across roughly 140 countries and territories, highlighting the challenges of maintaining such a vast network.

Future Prospects

Starlink continues to evolve with its third-generation satellites and gateway ground stations. These advancements will add an order of magnitude improvement in capacity compared to the current satellite generation, with SpaceX targeting to begin launching its third-generation satellites in the first half of 2026. The increased capacity is already pushing prices down and performance up, with Starlink introducing region-specific pricing, flexible plans for RVs, boats, and businesses, and even a Global Roaming service. In some regions, monthly prices have dropped from around $100 to approximately $50 or less to become more competitive.
