Spinal Tap 2: The Band Returns for One Final Concert with Star-Studded Lineup
The Return of a Cultural Phenomenon
The upcoming American mockumentary comedy film ‘Spinal Tap II: The End Continues’ is directed by Rob Reiner and features Christopher Guest, Michael McKean, and Harry Shearer reprising their roles as members of the fictional heavy metal band Spinal Tap, who are reuniting after 15 years for one final show.
A Long-Awaited Reunion
The film is scheduled for release on September 12, 2025, and boasts an impressive lineup of musical cameos, including Paul McCartney, Elton John, and Garth Brooks. The production, which began in New Orleans with a budget of $22.6 million, also features appearances by Questlove and Trisha Yearwood.
The story catches up with the band members in their current lives: Nigel Tufnel has been running a cheese and guitar shop in Berwick-upon-Tweed, where he performs with a local folk band playing electric guitar alongside penny whistles and mandolins. Meanwhile, David St. Hubbins has been living in Morro Bay, California, writing music for podcasts.
Behind the Scenes
Like the original film, the production maintains its signature style with loose scripting to allow for actor improvisation, utilizing a dual digital camera setup for spontaneous scene capture.
Music and Legacy
Accompanying the film’s release, Spinal Tap will launch their fourth album, also titled ‘The End Continues,’ through Interscope Records. The album will feature both new songs and re-recorded Spinal Tap tracks, including collaborations with Elton John, Paul McCartney, Garth Brooks, and Trisha Yearwood.
The plot revolves around a posthumous contract obligation: following their manager Ian Faith’s death, his widow inherits a contract requiring one final Spinal Tap concert. The reunion allows filmmaker Marty DiBergi to document their last performance and potentially make amends with the band, who were unhappy with their portrayal in the original documentary.
