A Historic Club’s Unprecedented Challenge

SPAL, founded in 1907, has long been associated with its iconic home ground, Stadio Paolo Mazza, where they’ve played since 1928. However, the club now faces one of its most challenging periods in recent history.

Current Crisis and Decision

In a shocking development on June 7, 2025, SPAL announced its withdrawal from the 2025-26 Serie C season. This decision came despite significant financial investment of approximately €50 million over the past four years, with the club citing ongoing financial strain and difficulties in attracting new investors.

The club’s ownership expressed “great regret” over the decision, describing it as a “painful epilogue” that came after numerous attempts to find concrete solutions to maintain the project.

The Path Forward

Following these events, SPAL has entered liquidation. However, a new chapter has begun with the establishment of Ars et Labor Ferrara, which will compete in the Eccellenza Emilia-Romagna, the fifth tier of Italian football, for the 2025/2026 season.

Historical Context

The club’s rich history dates back to its origins as a cultural and religious association, before evolving into a multi-sports company in 1913 under the name Società Polisportiva Ars et Labor. During its golden era, SPAL competed in Serie A for 16 out of 17 seasons from 1951 to 1968, achieving their best-ever finish of fifth place in 1959-60 and reaching the Coppa Italia final in 1961-62.

Looking to the Future

While the club’s ownership maintains they are not bankrupt and retain ownership of SPAL, they are currently evaluating various options, including the possibility of registering the club in a lower league. This situation represents a significant turning point for one of Italy’s historic football institutions, as it seeks to rebuild and restore its former glory.
