Prestigious Recognition for Suffolk’s Coastal Gem

Southwold has achieved another milestone in 2025 by retaining its coveted Blue Flag status, a recognition it has held consistently since 2022. The prestigious award comes as part of a broader celebration of England’s finest beaches, with Southwold being among 114 sites recognized nationwide.

According to Keep Britain Tidy’s chief executive Allison Ogden-Newton OBE, this achievement reflects the dedicated efforts of beach managers, local authorities, volunteers, residents, and businesses in maintaining and improving these vital blue spaces. The accreditation demonstrates a strong commitment to protecting these areas for future generations.

Major Sporting Event Arrives

In an exciting development for the town, Southwold’s North Parade has been selected as the finishing point for Stage 1 of the Tour of Britain, scheduled for Tuesday 2nd September 2025. This event marks a significant milestone in the town’s sporting calendar.

Thriving Tourism and Local Economy

The town’s economy continues to focus on services, including hotels, holiday lets, catering, and tourism. As an important commercial centre, Southwold maintains a vibrant mix of independent shops, cafés, and restaurants, alongside its traditional twice-weekly market on Mondays and Thursdays.

Coastal Management and Future Development

Looking toward the future, East Suffolk Council’s Coastal Management service has appointed Balfour Beatty to undertake crucial repair works in Southwold. The project, which commenced in February 2025, is expected to last approximately three weeks, with work schedules dependent on tide and weather conditions.

Cultural and Community Events

The town maintains an active calendar of events throughout the year, offering diverse activities from traditional seaside pleasures like strolling along the famous Pier and enjoying ice cream on the promenade to participating in festivals and cultural events. The summer season is particularly vibrant, with Suffolk Summer Theatres presenting varied programmes of plays from July to September at the Southwold Arts Centre.
