A Long-Awaited Return to Feature Filmmaking

Filmmaker Sophie Brooks is preparing for her return to the spotlight with her newest feature film ‘Oh, Hi!’, which will premiere at the Sundance Film Festival, featuring an impressive cast including Molly Gordon, Logan Lerman, John Reynolds, and Geraldine Viswanathan.

From First Success to Sophomore Feature

Brooks’ journey began nine years ago when she was in her mid-twenties. Her debut feature ‘The Boy Downstairs’ made waves at the Tribeca Film Festival in 2017, starring Zosia Mamet in the lead role.

The screenplay for ‘Oh, Hi!’ was written during an intensive two-and-a-half-week period, serving as what Brooks describes as ‘a life raft during the loneliness of Covid.’ The script immediately resonated with lead actress Molly Gordon and Brooks’ brother/producer David Brooks, leading to further development.

Making the Dream a Reality

The film completed its principal photography in September 2024, with 21 days of shooting in upstate New York. Brooks achieved significant milestones in the production, securing both her dream cast and the necessary financing, despite previous setbacks.

Looking Ahead

The film is scheduled to premiere at the 2025 Sundance Film Festival on January 26, followed by a nationwide theatrical release on July 25 through Sony Pictures Classics. This marks a significant moment in Brooks’ career, demonstrating her persistence and growth as a filmmaker in the independent cinema landscape.
