Tourism Expansion and Enhanced Connectivity

The Isles of Scilly are experiencing significant growth in tourism arrivals, supported by Skybus’s expanded summer schedule for 2025. The airline has increased its flight frequency from Cornwall Airport Newquay to the archipelago, marking a substantial improvement in connectivity to these stunning islands off Cornwall’s coast.

Starting from May 12, 2025, the service will operate two daily flights between Newquay and St. Mary’s Airport, up from three weekly flights. As peak season approaches, the schedule will further expand with a third daily flight beginning July 1, operating Monday through Saturday at lunchtime.

Economic Impact and Local Benefits

The expanded connectivity is expected to bring significant benefits to local businesses, with hotels, restaurants, shops, and tour operators seeing increased activity from higher visitor numbers. The tourism industry, vital to the local economy, will receive a boost from increased tourist spending. Additionally, local businesses will benefit from improved access to mainland services and supplies.

Island Life and Environmental Balance

Tourism currently accounts for approximately 85% of the islands’ income. The archipelago’s success in attracting visitors stems from its special environment, favorable summer climate, relaxed culture, and efficient coordination of tourism providers.

However, the islands face challenges, particularly regarding housing availability. With limited private property ownership and most units being let by the Duchy of Cornwall and the council, development restrictions are in place to protect the islands’ unique environment and prevent exceeding infrastructural capacity.

Cultural and Environmental Initiatives

The islands are maintaining their cultural vibrancy with several initiatives for 2025, including an annual photography competition offering trips for two as prizes. The calendar features events such as the Taste of Scilly food and drink celebration, the Walk Scilly Festival exploring natural beauty and heritage, the Creative Scilly Festival, and The Ocean Scilly Festival celebrating maritime culture.

The islands are also making strides in sustainability, with recent developments including an Integrated Health and Social Care project and significant progress in reducing carbon emissions, with the Council reporting a 75% reduction in their carbon footprint.
