RTÉ’s Transformation: New Funding, Leadership Changes, and Reform Implementation in 2025

Major Changes at Ireland’s National Broadcaster
RTÉ (Raidió Teilifís Éireann), Ireland’s public service broadcaster, has been a cornerstone of Irish media since 1926, producing and broadcasting programmes on television, radio and online. It stands as one of the oldest continuously operating public service broadcasters globally.
Financial Restructuring and Funding
The broadcaster has secured a significant funding package for the next three years, with combined funding from both the exchequer and license fee totalling €750 million. The allocation breaks down to €225 million for 2025, €240 million in 2026, and €260 million in 2027, with RTÉ receiving at least 85% of the total fund.
Ongoing Reforms and Governance Changes
The organization is currently implementing a comprehensive reform program, with 78 recommendations being addressed. While 40 recommendations have been achieved, 36 are currently delayed, and two are reported as ‘on track.’ A significant part of these reforms includes an ‘ambitious voluntary exit’ scheme, through which RTÉ aims to reduce its workforce by 400 positions.
Leadership and Programming Updates
In recent developments, Alan Tyler has been appointed as the new Head of Delegation, taking on the role of Director of RTÉ’s Entertainment and Music Division. Tyler, who joined RTÉ in May 2022, brings valuable experience from his previous position at the BBC, where he worked on successful shows including Strictly Come Dancing and Comic Relief.
Future Outlook
The Broadcasting (Amendment) Bill aims to enhance accountability, transparency, and value-for-money in public service media providers, establishing a new framework to support public service content delivery. This multi-annual funding arrangement is designed to provide RTÉ with certainty and the ability to plan on a long-term basis for delivering agreed strategies.
