Major Changes Coming to RTÉ Player

RTÉ has confirmed it will be implementing mandatory sign-in across its digital services in 2025, with the change aimed at delivering more personalised content and services tailored to viewers’ preferences.

The transformation is part of the broadcaster’s five-year strategy to evolve their digital products, including RTÉ Player, Audio App, News App and rte.ie, with the goal of achieving best-in-class status while offering improved accessibility and reliability.

Current Features and Content Offering

RTÉ Player, the on-demand video service from Ireland’s public media broadcaster, provides both live and recorded television programs, as well as exclusive content. The service offers news, current affairs, entertainment, sport, and both local and international dramas, with programming available for 7 to 21 days after broadcast.

The platform currently hosts an impressive collection of TV boxsets, including popular series such as Broadchurch, The Boy That Never Was, Deadwood, The Gold, Mad Men, Mr. Robot, The Patient, and Time. Additionally, the service is expanding its original content lineup, with new series like ‘Good Boy’ launching this week.

International Access and Restrictions

The service operates in two formats: one for the Republic of Ireland and Northern Ireland, and another for international audiences. As Ireland’s national public service broadcaster, RTÉ Player is primarily geo-restricted to viewers in Ireland due to licensing agreements with content providers.

Future Developments

Looking ahead, RTÉ’s strategy includes continuing evolution of their digital portfolio, with a focus on delivering a more relevant streaming service featuring recommendations and tailored features, while maintaining full compliance with data protection responsibilities.
