Rising Star Kimi Antonelli Secures Historic Mercedes F1 Seat for 2025 Season

Breaking New Ground in Formula 1
Mercedes has made a bold move by signing 18-year-old Italian driver Andrea Kimi Antonelli to partner with George Russell for the 2025 Formula 1 season.
Born in Bologna on August 25, 2006, Antonelli comes from a racing background – his father, Marco, is a former racing driver who runs his own motorsport team.
A Meteoric Rise Through the Ranks
Antonelli’s journey began when he joined Mercedes’ junior programme as a 12-year-old in 2019. His impressive career includes multiple achievements in karting, including FIA Karting European Championship and WSK Euro series titles. In 2022, he dominated both the ADAC and Italian Formula 4 championships, before claiming the 2023 Formula Regional European Championship.
In Formula 2, Antonelli has shown remarkable progress throughout the season. His breakthrough came midway through the championship, with a Sprint victory at Silverstone in wet conditions, followed by a Feature win at the Hungaroring. He particularly impressed at Spa-Francorchamps with a stunning wet-weather move.
Historic Achievement and Future Prospects
When Antonelli makes his debut at the 2025 Australian Grand Prix, he will become the third-youngest driver ever to start a Formula 1 race. Mercedes believes Antonelli has the potential to be one of the greats, and his selection represents a historic moment as both their drivers will have come through their junior programme. The team is confident his upbringing, values, and personality will help him handle the immense pressure ahead.
Speaking about his appointment, Antonelli said: “It is an amazing feeling to be announced as a Mercedes works driver alongside George Russell for 2025. Reaching F1 is a dream I’ve had since I was a small boy. I am still learning a lot, but I feel ready for the opportunity. I will be focused on getting better and delivering the best possible results for the team.”
