Remembering 9/11: Nation Unites for 24th Anniversary Commemoration in 2025
A Day of National Remembrance
The National September 11 Memorial & Museum leads the nation in marking this solemn anniversary, with the 24th commemoration ceremony taking place on the Memorial plaza, featuring an in-person reading of the names by family members.
Memorial Ceremony Details
The official ceremony will begin at 8:30 a.m. on September 11, 2025, with families gaining access to the Memorial plaza from 7:30 a.m. The event is expected to conclude around 1:00 p.m.
A citywide moment of silence will be observed at 8:46 a.m., marking the time when American Airlines Flight 11 struck the north tower of the World Trade Center. Houses of worship across the city will toll their bells at this time. Following this, families of victims from both the 9/11 attacks and the 1993 bombing will begin reading the names of all victims.
Evening Tribute
As day turns to night, the Tribute in Light will illuminate the Manhattan skyline, serving as a powerful memorial to the fallen Twin Towers of the World Trade Center.
National Impact and Education
The 9/11 Memorial & Museum serves as the country’s principal institution for exploring 9/11, documenting its impact, and examining its continuing significance. Through exhibitions and various programs, it educates the public – particularly the 100 million Americans born since the attacks or too young to remember – about terrorism’s consequences and its impact on communities.
Community Commemorations
The American Legion maintains its commitment to never forget this historic day. For over two decades, posts nationwide have conducted ceremonies to ensure their communities remember both the lives lost on 9/11 and those lost in the subsequent global war on terrorism.
The memorial continues to offer a serene space for reflection, remembrance, and tribute to the lives lost during the tragic events of September 11, 2001, standing as a testament to the resilience of the American spirit and the values that unite our nation.
