Breaking Development in High-Profile Cricket Case

Pakistan cricketer Haider Ali has been cleared of rape charges by the Greater Manchester Police (GMP), bringing relief after four weeks of uncertainty. On Thursday, GMP confirmed that all charges had been dropped following a thorough review.

Background of the Case

The case began when Haider Ali was arrested on August 3, 2025, while playing for the Pakistan Shaheens during their tour of England. The arrest followed a complaint lodged on August 4 by a British-Pakistani woman regarding an alleged sexual assault that occurred on July 23, 2025, at a Manchester hotel.

Investigation Findings

While the allegations were taken seriously, following a comprehensive review of all available evidence, the investigation has been closed. The authorities have noted that should any further information come to light, they would review the material and case again appropriately.

Impact on Cricketer’s Career

Haider, 24, has played two ODIs and 35 T20Is for Pakistan. He made his mark as a destructive power hitter, particularly with Peshawar Zalmi in 2020, where he scored 239 runs at a strike rate of over 157. His international debut was memorable, scoring a 33-ball 54 in a T20I game in Manchester as Pakistan secured a five-run victory.

Next Steps

Haider, who had been on bail since his arrest, is now free to leave the UK after having his passport returned. The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB), which had immediately suspended Haider after his arrest, has confirmed it will launch its own inquiry once he returns home. The PCB has stated they “reserve the right to take appropriate action under its Code of Conduct, if necessary.”
