Recent Encounter and World Cup Qualification Journey

Morocco emerged victorious with a 2-1 win against Niger in their FIFA World Cup qualifying match on March 21, 2025, demonstrating their continued dominance in African football.

Morocco’s Rising Prominence in African Football

Morocco’s selection as the host for AFCON 2025 builds on their impressive track record of successfully hosting major international football events, including the 2018 African Nations Championship, the 2022 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations, and the 2023 FIFA Club World Cup.

The country’s state-of-the-art infrastructure and passionate football culture have set the stage for what could be one of the most memorable editions of the Africa Cup of Nations. The tournament represents both a celebration of African football and a showcase of Morocco’s commitment to the sport.

AFCON 2025 Tournament Details

The 35th edition of the Africa Cup of Nations will take place from December 21, 2025, to January 18, 2026. The tournament has expanded significantly, featuring 24 teams, which highlights the growth and development of African football.

This marks the second time Morocco will host the prestigious tournament, with their first hosting dating back to 1988 when only eight teams competed. Due to FIFA’s expanded Club World Cup competition, this edition will make history as the first AFCON to be played over the Christmas and New Year period.

Looking Ahead

The successful hosting of AFCON 2025 carries additional significance as Morocco prepares for even bigger responsibilities, including co-hosting the 2030 FIFA World Cup. The tournament will follow a round-robin format in the group stage, with the top two teams automatically qualifying for the knockout stages. The four best third-placed teams will also advance to the round of 16, leading up to the final on January 18, 2026.
