Max Johnson’s Path to Redemption: From Season-Ending Injury to 2025 Comeback with UNC Football

A Dramatic Setback and the Road to Recovery
North Carolina quarterback Max Johnson’s 2024 season came to an abrupt halt when he suffered a broken femur during the Tar Heels’ Week 1 victory at Minnesota, requiring immediate hospitalization and surgery.
Despite the constant pain from his broken bone, Johnson understood the importance of not delaying his recovery. He began his rehabilitation journey on an underwater treadmill, progressing from walking to running around Thanksgiving.
New Leadership and Fresh Opportunities
Johnson is currently one of three quarterbacks listed on UNC’s 2025 spring football roster, preparing for the upcoming season which will mark the beginning of the Bill Belichick era at UNC on September 1 against TCU.
His resilience has earned him a spot on the 2025 Comeback Player of the Year Award Watch List. Throughout his college career, Johnson has demonstrated impressive statistics, throwing for more than 5,000 yards with 47 passing touchdowns. The award recognizes college football student-athletes who have overcome injury, illness, or other circumstances.
A Legacy of Perseverance
Johnson’s football prowess runs in his family – he is the son of Pro Bowl and Super Bowl quarterback Brad Johnson, and the nephew of former Georgia and Miami head coach Mark Richt. His original plan at North Carolina was to follow in the footsteps of successful UNC quarterbacks like Drake Maye and Sam Howell, hoping for a solid year that would lead him to the NFL.
Despite the setback, Johnson remains optimistic about his future, stating, “I have a lot of football left in me, and know I will be back out there next year.” He has committed to supporting his teammates throughout their current season and expressed gratitude for the support from fans.
