Manchester United made a winning start to the new Women’s Super League season at a rain-soaked Leigh Sports Village, defeating Leicester City 4-0 in Sunday’s lunchtime clash.
The scoring was opened by Ella Toone after 13 minutes, followed by Elisabeth Terland who doubled the lead before the break. Melvine Malard then secured the victory with two goals in the second half.
New Signings and Notable Performances
The match marked a historic occasion for the WSL, as fans were able to consume alcohol in view of the pitch for the first time, as part of a new trial that United have joined this season. Leicester City, who recently parted ways with manager Amandine Miquel just 10 days ago, showed resilience under interim head coach Rick Passmoor, though they struggled to make an impact.
Looking Ahead
The victory marks a triumphant start to United’s domestic campaign, which will now pause as the team focuses on their European endeavors. The Reds are set to face Norwegian side Brann in the first leg of the third qualifying round of the Champions League on Thursday.
The upcoming fixtures present significant challenges for Marc Skinner’s side, with matches against Arsenal (home), Liverpool (away), and champions Chelsea (home) on the horizon. The team aims to build upon their impressive third-placed finish from last season, which secured their European football qualification.
