Luka Dončić Commits to Lakers’ Future with £165M Extension After Historic Season

Lakers Secure Their Future Star
The Los Angeles Lakers have officially secured their future cornerstone as Luka Dončić has agreed to a three-year, $165 million maximum contract extension, with a player option in 2028. The deal was confirmed by his agent Bill Duffy of WME Basketball.
Financial Impact and Future Prospects
This crucial agreement prevents Dončić from entering free agency next summer by eliminating his 2026-27 player option. Looking ahead, Dončić could potentially opt out in 2028 to sign a new deal worth 35% of the salary cap, projecting to five years and $417 million. This would allow him to recover the earnings he forfeited when traded by the Dallas Mavericks, where he had been eligible for a five-year, $315 million supermax extension.
Remarkable Achievement and Performance
At just 25 years old, Dončić has already established himself as an MVP candidate, coming off an exceptional season where he averaged 33.9 points, 9.2 rebounds, and 9.8 assists while maintaining impressive shooting percentages of 49% from the floor, 38% from three-point range, and 79% from the free-throw line.
Historic Legacy in Making
Having played 400 regular season games and 50 playoff games, Dončić’s achievements include a Rookie of the Year trophy, a scoring title, and five consecutive All-NBA First Team selections before age 26 – a record he shares with Kevin Durant and Tim Duncan. As Lakers management stated, “Luka is an absolute killer on the court,” with the clear expectation that he will “lead our franchise to pursue future championships, a goal that will forever define the Lakers.”
Impact Beyond the Court
Dončić has already made significant contributions to the Lakers’ roster development, playing a crucial role in recent acquisitions including Deandre Ayton and Marcus Smart, maintaining strong relationships with fellow players and actively participating in recruitment efforts even while managing international commitments.
