Kurt Zouma’s Career Takes Unexpected Turn as Romanian Move Looms

A New Chapter Beckons
Former West Ham United captain Kurt Zouma is edging closer to a return to professional football, while his former teammates have already found new clubs – Vladimir Coufal at Hoffenheim, Aaron Cresswell at Stoke, and Danny Ings at Sheffield United.
The French defender’s journey took an unexpected turn when a proposed transfer to Shabab Al-Ahli in the United Arab Emirates collapsed after a failed medical in August 2024, eventually leading to his departure from West Ham when his contract expired in June 2025.
Recent Career Highlights
Zouma’s impressive career includes two Premier League titles with Chelsea, along with an EFL Cup, UEFA Champions League title, and UEFA Super Cup. His time at West Ham was crowned with success when he helped the team win the UEFA Conference League in his second season.
However, concerns about a serious knee problem influenced his departure from West Ham, with reports suggesting he was ‘one trip or twist away from suffering a career-ending injury.’ The decision to part ways was made as the pace and pressure of the Premier League became increasingly challenging for the defender.
Future Prospects
Despite these challenges, at just 30 years old, Zouma is still viewed as a potentially ‘exponential player’ in the Romanian league, provided he can overcome his medical issues. There’s optimism that he could become ‘one of the best players in our league, maybe even the best’.
His leadership qualities were evident when he served as West Ham’s captain following Declan Rice’s departure, making 103 appearances and scoring six goals during his tenure at the London club. This experience could prove valuable in his next career move.
