A Historic Evolution in Aviation Infrastructure

John F. Kennedy International Airport (JFK) is undergoing a historic $19 billion transformation to become a world-class airport. The ambitious public/private redevelopment program includes two new terminals across five previous terminal sites, expansion and modernization of existing terminals, streamlined roadways, popular local retail and dining, and stunning New York artwork.

Economic Impact and Significance

As the nation’s busiest airport for international travel, JFK plays a crucial role in global travel and the region’s economy. The airport handles over 62 million passengers annually, supports 149,000 jobs, and generates more than $33 billion in sales and $14 billion in wages, making it an essential component of the world’s air transportation system.

Major Development Projects

A cornerstone of the renovation is the new Terminal 1, which will be roughly the size of LaGuardia Airport’s two new terminals combined. The majority of this terminal is less than a year from opening and will replace the current space that opened in 1998, serving international flights with a budget exceeding $9.5 billion.

Terminal 5 is also receiving a major revamp, featuring new concessions, cultural experiences, and a park-inspired design, all scheduled for completion by the end of 2026. The terminal, which opened in 2008 and serves as JetBlue’s home, will showcase interactive events and live performances highlighting New York’s culture.

Infrastructure and Passenger Experience

The redevelopment program includes an entirely new, simplified airport roadway network, supported by $3.9 billion in Port Authority funding for on-airport infrastructure improvements, which will feature streamlined, easy-to-navigate roadways.

Set to complete in late 2025, the terminal overhaul will introduce new Terminals 1 and 6, smarter taxiways, and a fully electric ground fleet, aimed at reducing wait times, decreasing ramp noise, and improving air quality. The busiest U.S. international gateway is positioning itself to become the fastest and greenest airport.
