Historic Milestone for World’s Biggest Half Marathon

The Great North Run is set to mark an incredible 45 years of the famous event in 2026, continuing its legacy as one of the most prestigious running events globally. Since its inception in 1981, the event has grown dramatically, welcoming over 1.4 million finishers across its history.

Entry Details and Important Dates

The September Ballot for the 2026 event is now open, running from Wednesday 3 September at 8am until midnight on Sunday 14 September. The race will take place on Sunday 13 September 2026, offering an opportunity for both inspired newcomers and experienced runners to secure their place.

The initial ballot results will be announced on Monday 15 September, with a second ballot scheduled for January 2026 to confirm final places. Given the event’s growing profile and popularity, this year’s ballot is anticipated to be the largest ever.

New Charity Partnership and Event Features

AJ Bell has announced the Alzheimer’s Society as the official charity partner for the 2026 AJ Bell Great Run Series, including the Great North Run. This partnership aims to invest in a future without dementia, which currently stands as the UK’s biggest killer.

The iconic route features the famous Tyne Bridge crossing, bringing together world-class athletes, charity fundraisers, and first-time runners, all creating their own chapter in running history. As the world’s biggest half marathon, the event attracts 57,000 runners and features a spectacular course that takes participants from city to sea, finishing at the traditional South Shields finish line.

Alternative Entry Options

For those seeking guaranteed entry, memberships covering 2026, 2027, and 2028 are available at approximately £70. However, these memberships typically sell out quickly after each year’s event. Alternatively, runners can secure their place through charity entries, with thousands of places allocated to paired charities each year.
