Major Acquisition Reshapes Maritime Services Leader

Global Marine Systems (GMS), a key player in telecoms, oil & gas, and deep sea research markets, has been acquired by Keppel Corporation in March 2025. This acquisition marks a significant milestone for the company’s evolution in the maritime services sector.

Company Heritage and Global Presence

With a legacy spanning over 160 years in cable installation dating back to the first telegraph cables of the 1850s, GMS maintains a strong global presence. The company operates from key locations including Chelmsford, UK and Singapore, with strategic depots in Portland, UK; Bermuda; Victoria, Canada; Batangas, Philippines; and Batam, Indonesia.

Current Market Challenges and Future Outlook

The maritime industry is currently facing significant challenges, with GMS reporting substantial price declines in ship recycling markets, witnessing nearly USD 150/LDT removed from sub-continent ship recycling levels. The company has indicated that Q1 2025 may not bring the usual seasonal vigor to the industry. Market analysts suggest 2025 could be another challenging year for shipping and ship recycling markets overall, despite recent increases in overaged unit inflows from Chinese ship owners.

Technological Advancement and Service Evolution

GMS has significantly expanded its capabilities in recent years, particularly in submarine power cables and European Offshore Renewables markets. As a specialist provider of installation, maintenance, and repairs of submarine communications cable, the company operates its own fleet of vessels, ROVs, and specialized subsea trenching and burial equipment.

Strategic Partnerships and Market Position

The company maintains strategic joint ventures with China Telecom and Huawei, strengthening its market position. In line with industry trends, GMS is focusing on replacing manual systems with data-driven processes to enhance safety and compliance measures.
