A Surprising Deadline Day Move

Manchester United striker Rasmus Højlund has completed a loan move to Napoli for the 2025/26 season, bringing an end to his time at Old Trafford where he made 95 appearances and scored 26 goals.

The deal includes a €6m loan fee and comes with an obligation to buy for approximately £38 million (€44 million), which will be triggered if Napoli qualifies for the Champions League next season.

A Reluctant Departure

Despite making his desire to remain at Manchester United clear both publicly and privately, with the Danish striker stating “I have a contract until 2030, so I expect to play for Manchester United” and insisting “My plan is very clear, that is for me to stay and fight for my spot, whatever happens,” circumstances ultimately led to his exit.

The £66m arrival of Benjamin Sesko pushed Højlund down the pecking order at Manchester United. After being left out of United’s matchday squads at the start of the season, Højlund wanted to compete for a starting spot but was ultimately pushed out of the club.

Looking Ahead

Højlund now joins the Serie A champions under the management of Antonio Conte, where he arrives with “a lot to prove.” The move comes as Manchester United attempts to be smarter in the transfer market, though they are operating from a challenging position after finishing 15th last season.

Denmark coach Brian Riemer has offered a positive perspective on the transfer, suggesting it could be a beneficial move for Højlund’s career development. The young striker will now look to rediscover his form in Italian football, where he previously enjoyed success.
