A Legendary Career Comes to an End

A Black & Yellow legend has officially left the football stage as Mats Hummels concluded his impressive career with one final appearance for Borussia Dortmund against Juventus in the season opener.

Distinguished Career and Achievements

After 14 remarkable seasons with Dortmund, Hummels departed as a true club legend. The defender himself acknowledged the significance of his journey, noting it had been ‘a huge honour and pleasure’ to be part of Dortmund’s transformation from their 13th place position in January 2008 to their current status.

His trophy cabinet reflects his success with the club, including back-to-back Bundesliga titles in 2011 and 2012, DFB Cup victories in 2012 and 2021, and appearances in two Champions League finals at Wembley in 2013 and 2024.

Emotional Farewell at Signal Iduna Park

The farewell took place at Dortmund’s Signal Iduna Park, where even during the warm-up, fans showed their appreciation with abundant applause and chanting for their beloved legend as he warmed up in front of the South Stand – maintaining his traditional routine.

In an emotional moment, Hummels declared that his time at the club was ‘the best thing that could have happened to me.’ The significance of the occasion was evident in the scenes that followed, with standing ovations and passionate chants accompanying his lap of honour.

Legacy Secured

In a touching tribute, Hummels was honored with his own legend motif now displayed at the stadium next to Siggi Held’s. The former No. 15 has been immortalized with his picture at the stadium, ensuring he will remain a part of every matchday at Signal Iduna Park.

His exceptional centre-back play set him apart, with entire generations of players admiring his signature ability with the outside of his boot. As noted by club officials, ‘Mats will forever be part of BVB history’.
