A Historic Tribute at Monza

Ferrari is set to run a special one-off Formula 1 car livery at this weekend’s Italian Grand Prix, commemorating the 50th anniversary of Niki Lauda’s first world championship victory.

The unique design features a distinctive combination of scarlet red and black with white accents. The drivers’ names will be written in cursive script, matching the 1975 style, and the race numbers will be displayed in black on a white rectangular background.

The Historical Significance

Lauda secured his first championship crown at Monza in 1975 with a third-place finish, while his teammate Clay Regazzoni won the race to clinch the constructors’ championship. This victory marked the end of Ferrari’s 11-year title drought and initiated a successful championship run through the 1970s.

Lauda’s Lasting Legacy

The Austrian driver stands firmly in the pantheon of F1 greats, recognized as one of the best not just of his generation, but of all time. His impact on and off the track has built a legacy few will replicate in F1 folklore.

Hamilton’s Special Connection

The tribute carries additional significance given Lauda’s connection to Lewis Hamilton’s career. The Austrian legend played a crucial role in persuading Hamilton to join Mercedes in 2013, a move that led to six of Hamilton’s seven world championships. Now, Hamilton will experience his first Italian Grand Prix in Ferrari colours, which the team has described as “something truly special.”

Weekend Celebrations

The entire Ferrari team will participate in the tribute, with drivers Charles Leclerc and Lewis Hamilton wearing special race suits, shoes, and helmets inspired by the 1975 era. As part of the celebration, Lauda’s title-winning 312 T will be exhibited throughout September at the Maranello Museum, where the Italian GP qualifying and race will be broadcast. An additional car featuring the commemorative livery will be showcased at Monza during the race weekend.
