A Distinguished Career Comes to a Close

The BBC is celebrating Eric Knowles, the renowned expert on Antiques Roadshow, as he reflects on his remarkable 44-year career. The 71-year-old specialist in ceramics and glass began his journey in an unexpected way, finding his path to Bonhams auction house after losing his engineering job.

From Porter to Prominent Expert

Knowles’ journey began at London auction house Bonhams in 1976 as a porter in the ceramics department. His expertise and dedication led to his appointment as head of the department by 1981. His career continued to flourish as he established Bonhams’ offices in Bristol by 1992, before returning to London to direct the Decorative Arts Department.

Television Career and Expertise

Known particularly for his appearances on BBC’s Antiques Roadshow and Antiques Master, Knowles has distinguished himself as a recognised expert in his field. His natural talent for sharing complex knowledge in an engaging and accessible manner has made him a beloved figure in the antiques world.

Recent Developments and Legacy

In his final professional endeavour, Knowles was appointed non-executive director of scottishantiques.com, a decorative art and design emporium in Royal Tunbridge Wells, before officially retiring in November 2023. His expertise has established him as a leading authority in European and Oriental Ceramics from the Seventeenth to the Twentieth Century, the glass of Tiffany and Lalique, and Nineteenth and Twentieth Century Decorative Arts.

Today, several of his discoveries can be found in national museums, and his influence extends beyond the antiques world as he serves as an Ambassador for the Prince’s Trust.
