Die My Love: A Groundbreaking Portrait of Motherhood Earns Critical Acclaim at Cannes 2025
A Powerful Debut at Cannes
Lynne Ramsay’s latest film ‘Die My Love’ has made a spectacular debut at the Cannes Film Festival, earning a nine-minute standing ovation at its world premiere.
The film, adapted from Ariana Harwicz’s 2017 novel, follows the story of a new mother who experiences psychosis after developing postpartum depression. Oscar winner Jennifer Lawrence stars as the mother, with Robert Pattinson playing her husband, as their marriage faces intense challenges amid the wife’s mental health struggle.
Star-Studded Production
The film features an impressive ensemble cast including LaKeith Stanfield, Sissy Spacek, and Nick Nolte. The narrative follows a young couple who abandon their comfortable New York City life for a quieter existence in rural Montana, but their relationship faces severe tests after the arrival of their baby.
Critical Reception and Distribution
Critics have praised the film as Ramsay’s masterwork, with Jennifer Lawrence delivering what many consider one of her most fearless performances to date in this psychosexual marital thriller.
The film has already made industry headlines with streaming service Mubi securing the rights in a substantial $24 million deal. The agreement includes a full domestic theatrical release on 1,500 screens for 45 days.
Technical Achievement
The film reunites Ramsay with cinematographer Seamus McGarvey, who previously collaborated with her on ‘We Need to Talk About Kevin’. Shot on 35mm film in 1.33:1 Academy ratio, the visual style draws inspiration from classic psychological thrillers like Roman Polanski’s ‘Repulsion’ and ‘Rosemary’s Baby’.
A Personal Project
The project originated when Martin Scorsese discovered Ariana Harwicz’s novel in his book club and envisioned Lawrence in the leading role. He sent the book to Lawrence’s production company, Excellent Cadaver, and the actor later brought on Lynne Ramsay as director after sending her the book.
