Transforming Peterborough Through Social Infrastructure

Since assuming the role of Council Leader in May 2024, Dennis Jones has been steadfast in his mission to build social infrastructure in Peterborough, focusing on supporting residents to take pride in their community.

Community-Centered Leadership Approach

Jones emphasizes that social infrastructure holds equal importance to physical developments like roads and schools. His vision aims to create more attractive communities characterized by cleaner environments and stronger neighborly support, ultimately leading to increased satisfaction among residents.

A key element of Jones’s leadership is his commitment to making Peterborough a ‘child friendly city.’ This initiative places young people at the forefront of decision-making processes, with plans including the development of a Youth Zone. This facility will serve young people aged 8-18 (and up to 25 for those with additional needs), providing them with a safe, affordable space for socializing and skill development.

Tackling Financial Challenges

While facing significant financial challenges, Jones’s administration is working towards achieving financial sustainability through service transformation. Recent developments have highlighted the importance of cross-party cooperation, particularly in budget-setting processes, where the council has experienced some resistance despite months of collaborative effort through the Financial Sustainability Working Group.

Future Planning and Development

Under Jones’s leadership, the council is developing a new Local Plan to replace the one adopted in July 2019. This crucial document will guide planning applications and shape the city’s future development. As one of the UK’s fastest-growing cities, Peterborough’s careful planning aims to create spaces for living, working, and economic growth for future generations.
