Educational Excellence and Urban Progress

Charleston County Schools have achieved remarkable progress, with 65% of students reading at or above grade level – an all-time district high that exceeds the state average by five points. The district’s math proficiency stands at 54%, surpassing the state average by more than 10 points.

Urban Development and Infrastructure

A significant milestone in urban development has been reached with Charleston City Council’s approval of a comprehensive development plan for the Old Piggy Wiggly site on Sumar Street in West Ashley, breaking a seven-year deadlock.

The city is taking steps to address social challenges through the newly announced Lowcountry Rapid Housing Program, which aims to tackle homelessness across four municipalities by providing rapid housing and comprehensive support services.

Environmental and Community Initiatives

The South Carolina Office of Resilience and Charleston City have launched the Barberry Woods Restoration Project on Johns Island, demonstrating commitment to environmental preservation. The city’s cultural scene remains vibrant with the upcoming MOJA Arts Festival, scheduled for September 25 through October 5, 2025, promising eleven days of music, art, dance, food, and community celebrations.

Safety and Infrastructure Improvements

The city is currently implementing traffic modifications on Morrison Drive as part of an ongoing initiative to enhance pedestrian safety in the Upper Peninsula. Additionally, a comprehensive study is underway to evaluate the feasibility of converting Coming Street, Rutledge Avenue, and Ashley Avenue from one-way to two-way traffic.

Looking Forward

The city’s future direction will be outlined in the upcoming State of the City address by Mayor William Cogswell, scheduled for April 8, 2025, where he will discuss the city’s recent achievements and lay out priorities for the coming year.
