Broadcasting Legend Melvyn Bragg Ends 26-Year Journey with BBC Radio 4’s In Our Time

End of an Era in British Broadcasting
Melvyn Bragg has stepped down as host of BBC Radio 4’s In Our Time after 26 years, having hosted more than 1,000 episodes of the discussion programme since its launch in 1998.
Throughout his tenure, Bragg led fascinating conversations with academics, covering a vast spectrum of topics ranging from Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland to Zenobia, Queen of the Palmyrene Empire. The show has maintained its position as one of Radio 4’s most listened to programmes and has shown particular popularity on BBC Sounds, especially among listeners under 35.
A Distinguished Career
Lord Bragg’s journey with the BBC began in 1961 as a general trainee, leading to various roles including presenting The South Bank Show from 1978 to 2023. In Our Time was conceived for Bragg in 1998 after leaving his role as presenter for Start the Week. He was given the Thursday “death-slot” and created what he called a “simple idea,” expecting the show to last only a few months.
Legacy and Impact
BBC Director General Tim Davie praised Bragg’s contribution, noting his “passion for the arts, intellectual curiosity, and unwavering commitment to public service broadcasting” that has enriched millions of lives over more than 60 years. Through In Our Time, he brought “depth, insight, and humanity” to the airwaves every week for over a quarter of a century.
While Bragg will no longer front the series, he will continue to contribute to Radio 4, with a new project already planned for 2026. Later this year, Radio 4 will air some of Lord Bragg’s most memorable episodes to celebrate his decades-long contribution to the programme.
