A New Chapter in British Film Support

The British Film Institute (BFI), a charitable organisation dedicated to promoting and preserving independent and mainstream filmmaking in the United Kingdom, continues its mission through National Lottery funding to support film production, distribution, and education.

Current Initiatives and Funding Opportunities

The BFI has recently introduced four focused film funds under the newly-launched BFI National Lottery Filmmaking Fund, allocating £36.6 million towards the production and development of feature films over three years.

The funding structure includes the BFI Discovery Fund for directorial debuts, supporting six features with budgets below £3.5 million annually, and the BFI Impact Fund, which aims to fund five projects yearly from either second-time filmmakers or high-budget debuts. The Impact Fund specifically targets underrepresentation in creative leadership roles and provides opportunities for upskilling and mentoring.

New Initiatives for Documentary Filmmakers

Starting September 2025, the BFI Doc Society team will introduce regular online coffee mornings, offering filmmakers opportunities to discuss funding options, seek advice, and engage in peer-to-peer networking. Additionally, the BFI Doc Society Fund is facilitating group attendance at the Clermont-Ferrand International Short Film Festival and Market in February 2026, providing selected filmmakers with networking and learning opportunities with international industry professionals.

Emerging Talent Development

The BFI Doc Society RISE Producer Programme 2025 has been established to support six UK-based producers, specifically addressing socio-economic barriers for first-time feature documentary producers. The programme offers flexible support mechanisms, including bespoke one-to-one consultancies, group presentations, and market introduction opportunities.

Looking Forward

The BFI continues to provide funding support across a broad spectrum of films, projects, and organisations throughout the UK, aligned with their Screen Culture 2033 strategy, demonstrating their ongoing commitment to the future of British cinema.
