Belgrade’s Infrastructure Boom: A City Transforming for the Future
A Capital City’s Renaissance
Belgrade, the capital of Serbia, has emerged as a pivotal force in the Balkans, showcasing its growing influence through its vibrant tech scene and modern development initiatives.
Infrastructure Revolution
The city’s most transformative project is the long-awaited Belgrade Metro, developed in partnership with Chinese and French entities. This game-changing initiative aims to modernize public transport, reduce urban congestion, and stimulate real estate development along its routes. The project is expected to create numerous employment opportunities during both construction and operational phases.
In preparation for hosting the 2027 World Expo, the city has secured a substantial €12 billion investment package. This includes the construction of a new exhibition space in the Surcin suburb, a new soccer stadium, and railway infrastructure connecting Surcin with Belgrade’s main train station and Nikola Tesla Airport. The development will also feature approximately 1,500 new residential units near the exhibition space.
Green Initiatives and Sustainable Development
Belgrade is currently implementing a comprehensive Green Infrastructure Strategy, aimed at creating a healthy, safe, and comfortable living environment for its residents. The initial phase of this environmental initiative, running from 2025-2027, has secured funding of approximately €12 million, demonstrating the city’s commitment to sustainable urban development.
Economic Outlook
According to economic experts, Serbia’s GDP growth in 2025 is projected to be between 2 and 2.5 percent. The country’s inflation rate stands at approximately five percent, ranking among the higher rates within the European context. Despite challenges, the economy is expected to maintain growth of 3.5-4% over the medium term, driven by consumption and investment. This sustained economic growth is anticipated to continue improving living standards for Belgrade’s residents.
International Connectivity
A flagship project enhancing Belgrade’s international connections is the Belgrade-Budapest high-speed railway, part of the Belt and Road Initiative. This development is expected to boost cross-border investments and strengthen economic integration within the Western Balkans region.
