Azores Transforms Tourism: Leading the Way in Sustainable Travel and Innovation
A Pioneer in Sustainable Tourism
The Azores has made history as the first island archipelago globally to achieve international certification as a sustainable destination, recognized under the EarthCheck Sustainable Destination program. This prestigious certification is currently shared by only 13 regions worldwide.
Tourism Growth and Innovation
The archipelago is experiencing strong tourism growth, attracting visitors with its breathtaking scenery, including volcanic landscapes, deep-blue crater lakes, and rolling emerald hills. Both international and Portuguese tourists are increasingly exploring what the islands have to offer, from cozy villages to dramatic coastlines.
Recent statistics from the Azores’ Regional Statistics Service (SREA) reveal impressive growth, with total overnight stays across all accommodation types exceeding 638,000 in July 2025. Local accommodations have become increasingly popular, accounting for 310,500 overnight stays, representing 48.6% of the total, surpassing traditional hotel stays which recorded 293,100 nights (45.9%).
Revolutionary Green Initiatives
In a groundbreaking development, the Azores Whale Watching Terra Azul has launched TERRAZUL EVØ, the archipelago’s first 100% electric tourism boat. This initiative marks a significant step towards responsible tourism, demonstrating the region’s commitment to protecting its natural paradise while ensuring that future generations can enjoy the islands free from noise pollution.
Future Outlook
According to the Regional Secretary for Tourism, Mobility and Infrastructure, Berta Cabral, tourism in the Azores is undergoing a truly sustainable growth process. The archipelago’s efforts have been recognized internationally, as evidenced by its Gold Level Earth Check “Sustainable Destination” certification and its designation as the Best Adventure Tourism Destination in the World and Europe by the World Travel Awards (WTA).
The region has implemented a new development strategy aligned with the European Union’s multiannual financial framework, reflected in PEMTA 2030 – Strategic and Marketing Plan for Tourism in the Azores. This plan, structured in 2023, focuses on strengthening sustainability while considering new trends and traveler profiles.
