Anshuman Rath’s Remarkable Journey: Finding Cricket Joy Again with Hong Kong at Asia Cup 2025

A Career at Crossroads
When Anshuman Rath returned to Hong Kong in early 2023, his promising cricket career stood at a crossroads. After two years in India’s domestic circuit with Odisha, he was mentally and emotionally drained, 20 kilos heavier, and nursing injuries.
The Journey of Setbacks
Rath’s path had been marked by challenges, including a tough stint in Christchurch where he attempted to qualify for New Zealand, supported by Canterbury Cricket with a three-year work-to-residence visa. The move proved more challenging than anticipated.
By February 2023, Rath was ready to abandon cricket altogether, telling his father he would never touch a bat again. He contemplated switching to the corporate world, considering careers in finance, real estate, or insurance.
The Turning Point
A pivotal moment came when Mark Farmer, Cricket Hong Kong’s High Performance manager, intervened. He offered Rath a contract before he had even played, showing unprecedented faith in his abilities. For Rath, this gesture represented the first time in half a decade that he felt such support and trust, moving him to near tears.
Present Day Success
Today, Rath has rediscovered his rhythm, fitness, and most importantly, his passion for cricket. He now enjoys a balanced life in Hong Kong, spending time with family while embracing the city’s atmosphere. His return to form comes at a crucial time as he participates in the Asia Cup 2025, which began on September 09 at the Sheikh Zayed Stadium.
The transformation is evident in his approach to the game: “Every time I walk on the field now, I’m smiling, I’m laughing.” The structured, professional environment reminds him of the systems in the UK, providing a clear pathway forward.
