Andrea Jenkyns: From Conservative MP to Reform UK’s Groundbreaking Mayor of Greater Lincolnshire
Historic Victory and Political Transformation
Andrea Jenkyns made a significant political shift in November 2024, leaving the Conservative Party for Reform UK and announcing her candidacy for the newly created Mayor of Greater Lincolnshire position at a press conference with Nigel Farage.
Her campaign proved remarkably successful, as she secured victory with a commanding majority of almost 40,000 votes over the Conservatives, winning eight out of nine districts. In her new role, Jenkyns will represent 1.1 million people as leader of the Greater Lincolnshire Combined County Authority (GLCCA), overseeing areas under Lincolnshire County Council, North Lincolnshire Council, and North East Lincolnshire Council, with some powers being devolved to the new mayoral position.
Political Background and Career Evolution
Jenkyns previously served as the Conservative Party Member of Parliament for Morley and Outwood in West Yorkshire from 2015, where she first made headlines by defeating Shadow Chancellor Ed Balls. She held the position of Parliamentary Under-Secretary of State for Skills from July to October 2022 under the governments of Boris Johnson and Liz Truss, before being dismissed by Rishi Sunak. Her parliamentary career came to an end when she failed to win re-election to the successor seat of Leeds South West and Morley in the 2024 general election.
Current Political Stance and Priorities
Jenkyns’ decision to leave the Conservative Party was based on her belief that it had lost its way and no longer aligned with her conservative values. In her new role, she has prioritized issues including strict immigration control, energy independence, reevaluation of climate policies, and the promotion of vocational education and training.
Her high-profile defection and subsequent electoral success have significantly boosted Reform UK’s profile, contributing to recent gains in local elections and increased public support. In recognition of her rising influence within the party, Jenkyns was appointed to Reform UK’s decision-making board by Nigel Farage in August 2025.
