M25 Motorway: Major Infrastructure Improvements and Weekend Closures Ahead in 2025

Essential Infrastructure Updates on London’s Orbital
The M25, Europe’s second-longest city bypass stretching 117 miles around Greater London, serves as a crucial connection between major motorways including the M1, M4, A1, and M40, making it one of the UK’s busiest motorways.
Significant Improvements Underway
Major improvements at Junction 10 are nearing completion, with two crucial weekend closures scheduled for March 2025. The project aims to introduce additional lanes where the A3 meets the M25, enhancing traffic flow and safety. The closures are planned from 9pm on Friday 7 March until 6am on Monday 10 March, and again from 9pm on Friday 21 March until 6am on Monday 24 March.
These represent the final two planned closures for this project, following three weekend closures that already took place in 2024.
Project Developments and Environmental Considerations
The improvements project is progressing steadily towards completion in late summer 2025. Significant achievements include the opening of a new M25 anticlockwise entry slip road from the Brook Street roundabout, featuring extended slip roads that provide better visibility and allow safer merging at National Speed Limit.
The project also includes extensive environmental considerations, with plans to plant 21,000 trees and shrubs in January 2025. Additionally, three attenuation ponds have been completed across the scheme to manage rainwater and protect surrounding rivers.
Impact on Travelers
National Highways’ senior project manager, Jonathan Wade, acknowledged the disruption, stating that while the improvements will benefit millions in the long term, some short-term disruption is unavoidable for infrastructure work of this scale.
The March closures coincide with England’s World Cup Qualifier against Albania, prompting concerns about traffic disruption for football fans traveling from Wembley Stadium.
