A Sudden Loss in Turkish Football

Turkish club Adanaspor announced the passing of their technical director Sol Bamba, who fell ill before a match against Manisa Football Club and was rushed to Manisa Celal Bayar University Hospital, where he unfortunately lost his battle for life. The club expressed their condolences to his family and community.

A Distinguished Career Journey

Bamba’s football journey began at Paris Saint-Germain (PSG) at age 11, where he was discovered by club scouts playing street football in Paris. Initially, his mother had hoped for him to become a doctor.

His professional career took him to Scotland with Dunfermline Athletic in 2006, where he helped the club reach the Scottish Cup final. He later moved to Hibernian before joining Leicester City in January 2011. After a spell with Turkish club Trabzonspor, he joined Leeds United, where he was appointed club captain.

Triumph Over Adversity

In 2021, while at Cardiff, Bamba faced a significant personal challenge when he was diagnosed with Non-Hodgkin lymphoma. However, he showed remarkable resilience, becoming cancer-free after chemotherapy and returning to play for both Cardiff and Middlesbrough.

Legacy and Impact

Remembered as “a hero to all of us, a leader in every dressing room and a true gentleman” by Cardiff City, Bamba transitioned into coaching after his playing career, serving as assistant manager at Cardiff before taking his final role as technical director at Adanaspor. He was widely regarded as one of the nicest people in football.

International Recognition

Throughout his career, Bamba earned 46 caps for the Ivory Coast national team, making his international debut in 2008. He was part of the 2010 World Cup squad, though he did not make any appearances in the tournament.
