Recent Developments in Harris’ Post-Vice Presidency

While vice presidents typically receive six months of Secret Service protection after leaving office, President Joe Biden had signed a memorandum in January extending Harris’ protection to 18 months. However, a significant change has occurred in recent weeks.

President Trump has officially authorized the discontinuation of security-related procedures for Former Vice President Kamala D. Harris, effective September 1, 2025.

State and Local Response

In response to this development, the Los Angeles Police Department and California Highway Patrol have stepped in to provide protection for Harris until another plan is established. The LAPD spokesperson confirmed this is a “temporary coordinated effort” to ensure no lapse in security.

L.A. Mayor Karen Bass, a longtime Harris ally, has criticized the move, calling it “another act of revenge following a long list of political retaliation” by Trump.

Security Concerns and Future Plans

Harris faced particular security concerns during her tenure as she was the first woman and first Black woman in the role. These concerns intensified after she became the nominee and remained high into January following the campaign.

Looking ahead, Harris is preparing to launch a tour for her upcoming book “107 Days” in late September, with scheduled visits to major American cities including New York City, Philadelphia and Los Angeles.

Political Future

According to Joel Goldstein, a law professor and expert on the modern vice presidency, Harris is well-positioned to run for office again, having gained unique experiences as both vice president and presidential candidate. Her potential future options include running for governor of California in 2026, pursuing a presidential bid in 2028, or exploring alternative paths outside of elected office.
