Breaking News: Evans Departs Rotherham United

Steve Evans’s second stint at Rotherham United has come to an abrupt end, with the manager being sacked on March 29, 2025, following a heavy 4-0 home defeat to Crawley Town. The team was sitting 16th in League One, 9 points above the relegation zone when the decision was made.

The Decision and Immediate Changes

The Scottish manager’s departure includes his entire coaching team, with assistant boss Paul Raynor and coaches Gary Mills and Ian Pledger also leaving the club. Former coach Matt Hamshaw has been appointed to take charge until the end of the season, working alongside goalkeeper coach Andy Warrington.

Evans’s Legacy and Recent Tenure

Evans had returned to Rotherham in April 2024, shortly after their relegation to League One was confirmed. Despite being given a three-year contract and overseeing 14 summer signings, with three additional recruits in January, the team struggled to meet expectations.

Throughout his managerial career, Evans has been a significant figure in English football, managing over 1,000 games and achieving over 500 wins across various clubs, including nine promotions.

Looking Forward

Hamshaw’s first match at the helm will be against Northampton Town on Tuesday. The change comes during a period of managerial upheaval in League One, with all three Yorkshire clubs having sacked their managers in March. The club is expected to make a full-time appointment in the summer.
