Latest Setback for Chelsea’s Captain

Chelsea captain Reece James is not expected to return to action until 2025 following his latest injury setback. In the 2024/25 season, James had managed only 241 minutes following recovery from his previous major hamstring problem, before suffering a new one.

Impact on Club and Player

The Telegraph has reported there is no set timeframe for James to get back on the pitch, with Chelsea determined not to put any pressure on the player. Following a scan to assess the latest damage, it is not likely to be before the end of 2024, and Chelsea will provide full mental support as well as physical rehabilitation.

The situation arose when James “felt something small” in training before a Premier League match against Leicester City. Manager Enzo Maresca acknowledged the mental battle that comes with being regularly sidelined, stating “If every time he gets an injury, it becomes hard for him [mentally], that’s even worse.” He added that James “has to accept that” while trying to avoid such situations as much as possible.

Season Performance and Future Outlook

Before this setback, James had been showing his importance to the team while pursuing a Champions League spot. His 2024-25 season statistics include one goal, two assists, 51 crosses (12 accurate), 23 corners and 14 chances created. Defensively, he contributed 21 clearances, 13 interceptions, nine tackles won and six blocks.

Club’s Support and Management

This marks James’s seventh separate hamstring problem since the 2021-22 campaign. Despite questions over the 24-year-old’s long-term future at Stamford Bridge, Chelsea has shown faith in their captain. While it represents a gamble, the club believes standing by James could ultimately reap rewards.
