The UK’s Busiest Orbital Motorway

The M25, Europe’s second-longest city bypass stretching 117 miles, orbits Greater London beginning at the Dartford Crossing. As a vital connector linking major motorways like the M1, M4, A1, and M40, it’s one of the UK’s busiest roads, managed by the Highways Agency through state-of-the-art control centres.

Major Infrastructure Improvements

The motorway is undergoing significant improvements set for completion in late summer 2025. Recent milestones include a new M25 anticlockwise entry slip road at Brook Street roundabout, designed to improve safety and traffic flow with increased visibility and better merging capabilities.

The development includes extensive environmental considerations, with plans to plant 21,000 trees and shrubs in January 2025. The scheme also features three attenuation ponds designed to manage stormwater runoff and protect surrounding rivers.

Upcoming Closures and Traffic Management

A significant closure is scheduled from March 21st to March 24th, 2025, which will coincide with England’s World Cup Qualifier against Albania, potentially causing substantial traffic disruption. The closure between Junction 10 (Wisley) and Junction 11 (A320 Chertsey) is necessary for bridge demolition work.

Smart Motorway Integration

The M25 employs variable speed limits and hard shoulder running on several stretches to manage congestion. With multiple service areas like Cobham and South Mimms, it serves both local and long-distance travel needs. Motorists are advised to check traffic reports before beginning their journey to identify potential incidents or delays and consider alternative route options when necessary.
