Gabriel Bortoleto: From F2 Champion to Sauber’s New Hope in Formula 1

A Rising Star’s Meteoric Ascent
Gabriel Bortoleto has established himself as one of motorsport’s most promising talents, becoming the fourth champion to win both FIA F3 and F2 titles in consecutive years. His journey began in his hometown of Osasco, Brazil, where he started karting at age seven.
Under the mentorship of two-time World Champion Fernando Alonso, Bortoleto’s career has been marked by consistent success. After winning races in Italian F4 and Formula Regional European, he claimed the 2023 FIA Formula 3 Championship with Trident. His progression to Formula 2 in 2024 proved equally impressive, as he secured the championship with Invicta Racing, making history by becoming the seventh driver to win the title in their rookie season.
Sauber’s Strategic Choice
Bortoleto’s appointment makes him one of four rookies on the 2025 grid, alongside Mercedes’ Kimi Antonelli and Alpine’s Jack Doohan. The Brazilian secured his position after outperforming veteran Valtteri Bottas, earning a seat next to Nico Hulkenberg in what will be an all-new lineup for the Hinwil-based team.
Future with Audi
Sauber’s COO and CTO Mattia Binotto has expressed confidence in their new signing, acknowledging Bortoleto’s proven winning capability in junior categories. His arrival marks a significant moment for Brazilian motorsport, as he becomes the first full-time Brazilian Grand Prix driver since Felipe Massa’s retirement in 2017.
As Formula 1’s summer break begins, Bortoleto has shown promising signs of improvement. Experts predict further development as he gains more experience, though he currently faces challenges in race craft and pace management, particularly in mixed conditions.
