Tragic Loss in British Showjumping

Chris Moyce passed away in hospital on April 15, 2025, following an accident that occurred in the warm-up area at Bury Farm Equestrian Centre, Slapton on April 4. The incident was confirmed by British Showjumping with “great sadness and regret”.

A Distinguished Career and Legacy

Moyce was renowned as a horseman in the truest and most classical sense, distinguished by his quiet expertise, generosity of spirit, and exceptional feel for horses. His life, dedicated to the sport, was spent in honest labour and noble pursuit. His career began under the guidance of Nicholas Smith, a stalwart of the international circuit.

Iain Graham, chief executive of British Showjumping, praised Moyce’s contributions to the sport, noting his extensive support for showjumping and the respect he commanded among officials, staff, and fellow competitors. He was particularly known for encouraging newcomers to the sport and dedicating significant time to British Showjumping activities in his region.

Impact on the Equestrian Community

His absence will be profoundly felt throughout the equestrian community – from the collecting ring to early-morning course walks and casual gatherings in the lorry park. Remembered as a man of quiet dignity, Moyce leaves behind not just accomplished young horses and grateful students, but also a lasting legacy of exemplary horsemanship, decency, and humility.

He is survived by his partner Mark Bellinger, his family, and numerous friends who will preserve his memory with affection and pride. While their loss is immeasurable, his legacy in the sport will endure.
