A Unique Return to Anfield

Jay Spearing made an emotional return to Liverpool FC in June 2022, initially joining as U18s coach before transitioning to work alongside U21s head coach Barry Lewtas in a player-coach capacity.

Now at 36 years old, Spearing maintains his position as a player-coach in the academy for the 2025/26 season. He serves as both an assistant coach and a registered player, eligible to be selected as one of five over-age options in any given game. Though his appearances are limited, he featured four times for the young Reds last season and has even trained with the first team.

Recent Activity and Impact

Most recently, Spearing participated in Liverpool U21s’ opening game of this season’s EFL Trophy (known as the Vertu Trophy), which pits academy teams against senior sides from League One and League Two. The team began their tournament campaign at Burton’s Pirelli Stadium, having been drawn in Group H alongside Burton, Crewe and Chesterfield.

In his coaching role, Spearing works with a talented group of young players, focusing on showing them “what it takes to become a pro” on a daily basis. His responsibilities include guiding players in various aspects, from training sessions to gym work and proper nutrition.

Making a Difference in Youth Development

His unique position allows him to lend his experience on the pitch while effectively coaching players through games, proving particularly valuable in matches against senior opposition in the EFL Trophy.

Spearing’s journey at Liverpool spans back to when he was just seven years old, having been spotted playing for Greenleas FC in Wallasey. His first-team career included 55 appearances at Anfield, featuring in an FA Cup final at Wembley and securing a League Cup winners’ medal in 2012.

Future Aspirations

Looking ahead, Spearing has expressed his ambition to eventually lead his own team, following in the footsteps of Steven Gerrard, with the ultimate goal of becoming a first-team coach. He remains delighted that the club has shown faith in his abilities, and he is determined to repay that trust.
