Record-Breaking Applications and International Growth

The 2025 academic year has seen a remarkable surge in university applications, with UCAS reporting a total of 600,660 applicants – including a record number of UK 18-year-olds. The number of UK 18-year-old applicants increased by 2.1%, rising from 316,850 in 2024 to 323,360 in 2025.

The UK continues to be an attractive destination for international students, with a 2.7% increase in international undergraduate applicants. The largest increases came from China (+2,540), Ireland (+750), and the USA (+700).

Innovative Changes to Improve Access

In a significant move towards improving accessibility, UCAS has removed the application fee for students who receive free school meals. This change will be implemented through the adviser portal, where teachers and advisers will verify eligible students, who will then be exempt from paying the application fee.

The application process has been enhanced with several improvements, including:
– Prepopulated ‘place of education’ information for centre-linked applicants
– Simplified attendance options (Exam only, Full-time, and Part-time)
– A new feature allowing students to specify whether they attended education remotely or in person

Sector Challenges and Opportunities

However, the growth in applications is not uniform across the sector. High tariff universities are experiencing the strongest benefits, while less selective institutions are seeing declining numbers. This pattern is particularly evident in international student applications, where high tariff institutions saw a 6% increase compared to a 7% decrease at lower tariff institutions.

Looking Ahead

Looking forward to 2026, UCAS will implement further reforms, including changes to the personal statement format. The new system will feature three separate sections instead of one longer piece of text, aiming to provide equal opportunities for all students to showcase their potential, regardless of their background or writing experience.
