A New Dawn for the Man of Steel

James Gunn has revealed his next major project in the Superman saga: ‘Man of Tomorrow,’ scheduled to hit theaters on July 9, 2027.

The announcement comes following the success of this year’s ‘Superman,’ which introduced audiences to David Corenswet as Superman/Clark Kent, Nicholas Hoult as Lex Luthor, and Rachel Brosnahan as Lois Lane.

Box Office Success and Future Plans

The current Superman film has proven to be a remarkable success, becoming the highest-grossing comic book movie of the year with $611.6 million globally. The film’s domestic performance has been particularly strong, earning $352 million in the U.S. and Canada, with an impressive opening weekend of $122 million – the first DC title to surpass $100 million in its opening weekend since ‘Wonder Woman’ in 2017.

Intriguing New Direction

The announcement was accompanied by artwork from DC head Jim Lee, featuring an intriguing image of Lex Luthor in a green and purple mech suit alongside Superman. This armored suit, a staple of the comics and animation, will make its first-ever live-action appearance.

While Gunn has indicated that the new project won’t be a direct sequel to Superman, the promotional artwork suggests an interesting dynamic between the two characters, hinting at a possible alliance between the Man of Steel and his traditional adversary.

Expanding DC Universe

The film fits into DC Studios’ broader slate of upcoming releases, with Craig Gillespie’s ‘Supergirl’ due on June 26, 2026, and James Watkins’ horror title ‘Clayface’ scheduled for September 11, 2026. The current Superman film has already established a rich universe of characters, including Guy Gardner, Mister Terrific, and Hawkgirl, setting the stage for an expanded storytelling canvas.
