The iconic Great North Run brought thousands of runners to the North East on Sunday, September 7, covering the challenging 13.1-mile route from Newcastle city centre to the South Shields coast.

In the elite categories, Kenyan athletes dominated the podium, with Sheila Chepkirui winning the women’s race in an impressive time of 1:09:32. Course and Conditions

The race route featured both uphill and downhill sections, with miles 8-12 proving particularly challenging due to significant uphill stretches. However, the atmosphere remained electric throughout, with music, entertainment, and thousands of supporters lining the course to encourage the runners.

Historic Significance

Now in its 44th year, the Great North Run continues to exemplify ordinary people achieving extraordinary feats, as participants complete the famous 13.1-mile journey from city to sea. This year’s event featured a specially designed medal created in collaboration with Newcastle-based ‘art of illusion’ artist Howard Lee, incorporating the iconic Tyne Bridge alongside inspirational text.

Community Impact

The 2025 edition saw tens of thousands of participants take part in the famous half marathon, with many runners sporting fantastic costumes and raising money for various charitable causes. The event supported numerous charitable organizations, including the Alzheimer’s Society, which continues its vital work supporting those living with dementia and their loved ones while funding crucial research and campaigning for change.
